When I first read the Drudge Report headline I had a short reality lapse ( o.k. insert your own ridicule here) and thought great, maybe the Obama administration and especially Attorney General Eric Holder will start having to tell the truth about the crime, or if you prefer stupidity ,of illegally shipping 2,000 high powered guns to the Mexican drug cartels. These illegal shipments of guns were used to murder hundreds of innocent Mexicans and some Americans including 2 American law enforcement officers. http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0811/62320.html
Well I was wrong. Instead of at least firing Melson for an action that others have gone to prison for, Melson was transferred to another cushy government position until he can claim his government retirement. A.G. Holder claimed he knew nothing about the illegal shipment of guns to Mexico until a couple of weeks before the congressional hearing on this latest government use of murder and terror to get more gun control legislation in the U.S. Most of the weapons that the Mexican cartels have ( other than what Eric Holder gave them) come from corrupt Mexican cops and military, not Americans. To be fair, there are some American guns smuggled across the border, but not a great number.

I have always believed that certain wicked elements of the U.S. government in conjunction with wicked elements of some of our allies, during several administrations have used these kinds of murderous terrorism tactics to advance the goal of disarming and monitoring the law abiding American public. Many people have been skeptical and have heaped ridicule on other than government "approved" views about Waco, Oklahoma City, 9/11, and many of the other "Lone Gunman" sensational mass murders and "terrorist plots," which in turn produced more crime bills and more restriction of personal liberty, and endless wars.
People say our government would never do anything on purpose or allow something to happen on purpose which would sacrifice innocent people in order to further what the government considers a "greater" cause. Those same people say that our government is just a bunch of bumbling idiots much like The Three Stooges. I say baloney. Governments throughout history, who became too powerful and corrupt, did whatever they could to entrench their power including terrorizing and murdering their own people. Providing guns to a bunch of Mexican drug cartel thugs is just another in the long series of evil acts.

Rick you are on the right trail. That whole episode with the murder of U.S. District Judge John Roll and the wounding of Rep. Gabby Giffords last January in Arizona is very peculiar. Most all of the "news" coverage about this shooting revolved around Giffords and not the judge who actually was killed.
I've got more to add about this later, but have to leave for a few hours but ponder on this. In 1994 Judge Roll ruled that background checks for handguns under the Brady Law were unconstitutional, but was later reversed but the Supreme Court.
Maybe Judge Roll was being fed some damaging information about the Mexican gun smuggling from some of the honest ATF agents and Border Patrol agents who were told to shut up by their superiors.

Wow, talk about arming people who might be, or might become, your enemies:
Just another "unintended consequence" of our military being sent all over the world...we ship armaments abroad for their use, then it's just too much trouble and expense to ship it all back. What do we do when they pull this stuff out in strife with, say, Israel...or sell it to someone who then threatens Israel? It'll be global thermonuclear war then, for sure. Might as well go out and hack your own limbs off and save time.
Then you can ponder the helicopter crash during the Bin Laden compound assault, and Pakistan letting the Communist Chinese see the advanced technology in the aircraft. Good heavens, it never ends. The people we elect just don't seem to care a jot about keeping us safe REALLY, now, do they? Why don't they just concentrate on protecting our liberty, enforcing contracts, prosecuting fraud, and obeying the Constitution?

Just an oversite on your part I'm sure, but you forgot to mention that during the same 20+ year period, the violent crime rate (according to the FBI) has fallen.

I don't believe my Grandfather went through any kind of background check when he purchased the handgun that I now own... So how is this the most free and best time to be a firearm owner?

What constitutes a legitimate black market source?
Children have proved to be able to obtain alcohol and drugs; does that mean it would be no big deal if the government was suppling via an undercover operation?

Melson was thrown to the dogs in the hope that we, the people, will be satisfied and not continue to ask questions. And he was not fired, merely moved to another position. Perhaps the fear is that if he were fired he would be more likely to talk to reporters or the Congressional investigators?
We have not heard the full extent of the story. I read an article that connected the gunrunners with the drug smugglers. The possible ramifications of 'fast and furious' are truly frightening.

I live about 3 & 1/2 hours from Laredo. I have friends and business clients in Laredo, Eagle Pass, Del Rio and down further in the Rio Grande Valley. The violence is under-reported of what the cartels are doing on the U.S. side. We are seeing more of it here in Austin too.
You are so right stnmsn8. Melson was fired/reassigned to make it look like Holder and Janet Napalitano were on top of things. We only know of 2,000 or so guns including 50 cal rifles that were smuggled in Fast and Furious because the good cops could not stand it any longer. Bad news like this is always released from the government in dribbles and drabs.It is always worse than what they initially say. God knows how many other weapons and worse yet surveillance and communication technology this government gave the drug dealers. They don't have many cellular phone towers in the cities of Northern Mexico let alone the desert and mountain areas, but the cartels have no problems with instant communication.
I know personally one Border Patrol agent and have talked to several more through the years. She says there is no doubt that public officials in this country and Mexico tip off the cartels who smuggle tons of drugs in to this country. Federal officials with the blessing of Washington have been complicit in this country today and for many years in drug importation just like stnmsn8 alludes.

My niece lived in Del Rio until just recently. I have not had a chance to speak with her about why she moved back to Missouri but I am sure that the safety of her children had something to do with it.

I could be wrong, but this is developing into Obama's Iran -Contra type scandal I believe. We need a special prosecutor since Holder can not investigate himself. If there is another cancer in the White House, I would bet a dollar to a doughnut that Hillary Clinton will be the Democrat nominee in 2012. She has been laying pretty low lately.

The Obama administration is in the process of amputating an infected limb. However, I fear that the infection goes far beyond what they are willing to admit. Investigation of this scandal has been stonewalled by the Justice Department from the beginning. At least three whistle-blowers have been transferred in an attempt to quiet them and discourage any other agents from speaking to Congressional investigators.

The Republicans erred in the last election by focusing on defeating Hillary. Their success severely damaged this country. Although I have philosophical differences with her I am convinced that she has the good of this country in mind.

I think she would have a better chance of winning than Obama at this point Rick. If someone held a gun to my head and made me choose between those two, I would pick her because even though she is a socialist too, she is not as hard core as Obama.
I have said for a long time and I could be wrong, but I believe we get the candidates to vote for who were chosen for us by the money masters. They choose both candidates and are happy whom ever wins. Some of the people who write on these forums would do a better job of running the White House than what we have had since JFK.

During one broadcast of The Commonsense Coalition radio show, Derry Brownfield said when he was a boy of 14, he remembered walking to town with his rifle over his shoulder.
He said he went to the local hardware store and bought a box of shells, a dozen sticks of dynamite and some fuse, walked down the street with it all in his arms and nobody gave him a second glance.
I remember walking down the streets of my home town with my rifle and nobody paid me any mind either. But dynamite wasn't available to me in the '70s.
What fun could have been had!
