Speak Out: For the Obama library?

Posted by We Regret To Inform U on Thu, Jan 31, 2013, at 1:32 AM:

Word is the former childhood home of Reagan will be demolished for a parking lot for the Obama library. Is it ironic one of the worst presidents would do this on one of the most popular president's stomping grounds. He should have put it in Englewood to show folks the real Chicago. Or Hawaii would be nice. They can tear down Iolani Palace and build it there.

  • "The Commission on Chicago Landmarks previously denied the Gipper's home landmark status in 2012, according to The Washington Times, and the university subsequently scheduled demolition to begin in January. Officials claim the home does not reach landmark status because it is not architecturally significant and the nation's 40th president did nothing notable while living there."

Now how is that for reasoning?

  • "For the Obama library?"

This is an accurate example of the kind of idle speculation that presents an alluring and uncontainable magnetism to the grumpy old men of Speak Out who luxuriate in posting any tidbit of conjecture or gossip that may demean or slur the President of the United States in any conceivable fashion. In simplest terms, they are a joke.

  • Common, So your post means you've yet to download the official spin?

Personally, I think Reagan wouldn't care. Nothing in his writings that I have read suggest Chicago was worth remembering. He probably would pleased not to be associated with Chicago.

Silly me... I thought this was a newspaper report, not just idle speculation. Common, is it a possibility that your house out there in Bollinger County is built on a hazardous materials dump?

  • Reagan spent as much time in the men's room at the Show Me Center as he did in this residence. Should we enshrine it too?

  • Reagan's library is the second most visited. The one with the most visitors is Lyndon Johnson's.

I was surprised to read that a perfectly good airplane [a former Air Force One] is displayed at Reagans library.

I wonder if Obama's library will display a full sized golf course. At least it will surely have a teleprompter near the entryway.

  • howdy, Reagan wasn't in the rest room at the SMC although I can see how you would think that given the rough ride he took down William St. that was being readied for new asphalt.

Cape Girardeau, considering it's size has had it's share of presidential visits, more democrat than republican I think.

If he could run for a 3rd term I'm sure you would. What would it take? $30Trillion in debt? 19% unemployment? At what point - if ever - would a dead-loyal Obama supporter say "This guy is ruining my country"?

  • "...waiting for the list of all of the 'grumpy old men of Speak Out'..."

Grumpy Old Men Against Obama on Speak Out or as they are better know, GOMAOSO's are numerous. It is impossible to make a list of them because they are devious and often camouflage themselves by the use of different names. Anyone really interested need only read a few entries and the result should be obvious.

But here are a few hints to identify a Gomaoso...

If you think the nation was perfect only under Reagan, you might be a Gomaoso.

If you think that President Obama can destroy the country, you might be a Gomaoso.

If you think we are inescapably plunging to "socialism," you might be a Gomaoso.

If you start frequent comments with "back in my day," you might be a Gomaoso.

If you think everything was better in your long gone youth, you might be a Gomaoso.

If you think absolutely nothing positive has occurred in the past few years, you might be a Gomaoso.

If you think the economy was booming in 4 years ago, you might be a Gomaoso.

If you understand little of the world today, you might be a Gomaoso.

If you "First get your facts; then you can distort them at your leisure" (courtesy of Mark Twain), you might be a Gomaoso.

If you believe only in what's right (as in conservative), you might be a Gomaoso.

If your every single post includes denigration of the President, you might be a Gomaoso.

If you have zero confidence in America or Americans, you might be a Gomaoso.

Might be, but more likely you are a Democrat...

  • The Daily Mail is a United Kingdom newspaper. There is nothing posted in the comments by the 'grumpy old men of speak out' that appears inconsistent with the newspaper's reporting. There is no source provided by the left-leaning posters of speak-out that contradicts what the newspaper reported.

Why, then, is it 'Obama bashing' and 'fact-distorting' to report what was written in a newspaper of record?

Do any of you left-leaning posters have any valid source that disputes what the Daily Mail has written?

  • Precisely what made me inquire of Common if the possibility exists that his house was built over a hazardous materials dump.

  • Sometimes, you have to read more than the headlines.

"The Chicago home where the late President Ronald Reagan grew up is slated to be demolished and potentially turned into a parking lot for President Obama's Library, it was revealed today."

  • "...that disputes what the Daily Mail has written?"

The full title alone, removes the article from a "news" piece to speculation...

"Former President Ronald Reagan's childhood Chicago home to be demolished and turned into parking lot - but could it be for Obama's Presidential Library?"

There is no source quoted in the Daily Mail that even vaugely confirms that the President is determined to have a library built on or near this site.

What reason could the Daily Mail have for inserting the last phrase into the title?

-- Posted by commonsensematters on Fri, Feb 1, 2013, at 12:16 PM
  • The actual site of the Obama Library has not been selected, thought is supposedly has been narrowed to either Honolulu or Chicago.

One would presume that both locations have selected the actual building sites they intend to promote in order to win final approval, but those locations do not appear to have been made public.

  • "There is no source quoted in the Daily Mail that even vaugely confirms that the President is determined to have a library built on or near this site."

Not entirely true, the University of Chicago is in the running for the site.

"What reason could the Daily Mail have for inserting the last phrase into the title?"

You'd have to ask them, I'm in no position to speculate on the motives of a British newspaper's reasoning.

-- Posted by Shapley Hunter on Fri, Feb 1, 2013, at 12:20 PM
  • Obama is probably campaigning for funds to finance the foundation. When the government takes over the upkeep of the library best friends of the administration will end up profiting somehow.

I'm guessing he has more friends in Chicago, or at least more of the kind of friends that can get things done his way.

Disclaimer: Common, since you have trouble differentiating, this is speculation on my part.

  • "...the University of Chicago is in the running for the site."

This is certainly possible, but is still speculation.

"You'd have to ask them, I'm in no position to speculate..."

It was a rhetorical question. I am quite certain that had the Daily Mail not included that phrase, the article would not have made it into Speak Out. Consider the title of the thread.

I don't know about that Old John. We may need the prisons to house some of the people in the current administration before it is all over. And being in Illinois, it will keep most of them close to home.

  • If the crooked politicians in Chicago want the Reagan boyhood home gone.... it will be gone, no matter how they have to accomplish it.

And that is just reality, doesn't matter if you would be pro or con on saving it.
