Dear Editor, As president of the Cape Girardeau Riverfest Association Board of Directors, I would appreciate the opportunity to publicly acknowledge some of the many volunteers who made Riverfest happen. Dear Editor, After being an avid reader and supporter of this newspaper, there have been editorials that have touched my heart in many ways, and I appreciate the vast variety of concerns that are expressed for its readers and subscribers. Since June of 1993, my husband has undergone five surgeries with three of them being major, and because of many individuals and institutions, I'm compelled in some way to express my heartfelt thanks. ...

With those words, an official of the Cape Girardeau public schools recently heralded the arrival of a six-figure state grant. KELSO -- May peace prevail on earth. That was the message that dozens of parishioners of the St. Augustine Catholic Church in Kelso conveyed in a special service Monday morning. The group dedicated a peace pole on the church grounds. "In dedicating this pole today, we are reminding ourselves and others that we want to do our best for a peaceful, loving community," said Msgr. JACKSON -- Three months after its sanitary landfill was closed, the city of Jackson is waiting on Allied Waste Management to open a solid waste transfer station at the old landfill site. Meanwhile, the director of the Jackson Utilities and Public Works Department said the lack of a solid waste transfer station creates maintenance problems as the department tries to keep its fleet of waste collection trucks in operation...

Annexation, rezoning to accommodate parking space for Boyd Missouri's casino operation and a resolution establishing a policy for fee increases are among items on tonight's Cape Girardeau City Council agenda. The city staff is recommending that land east of Cape Rock Drive and west of Old Sprigg Street Road be annexed though an ordinance scheduled for first reading...
